In the quiet folds of the Tulbagh Valley, mornings begin gently. The first light spills over the Winterhoek mountains, glancing across the rows of vines that have stood here for generations. There is a familiar rhythm to the land — the crisp scent of soil warming under the sun, the distant murmur of the Berg River, the rustle of leaves in the breeze. It is here, in this secluded corner of the Western Cape, that Theuniskraal’s wines are born.
Our wines are not just liquids in a bottle. They are distilled seasons, bottled memories, and fragments of a legacy that began long before the cork is pressed in place. Every varietal in our range has its own story — a narrative written in the soil, shaped by the climate, and nurtured by the hands of our family.
Cape Riesling – Our Golden Beginning
The Cape Riesling is not just a wine; it is our first chapter, our family’s opening note in the grand symphony of South African winemaking. In 1948, the very first bottles under the Theuniskraal name carried this wine, and it was this same Riesling that, two years later, took gold at the Commonwealth Wine Show in London.
There’s something about Cape Riesling that captures the valley’s essence. The wine glimmers pale gold in the glass, releasing crisp aromas of green apple, citrus blossom, and a faint whisper of honey. On the palate, it is fresh, structured, and elegant — a wine that asks for slow appreciation. Whether paired with oysters by the sea, fresh garden salads, or simply sipped on a veranda as the sun slips behind the mountains, our Cape Riesling remains a living tribute to the past.
Sauvignon Blanc – Bright and Inviting
If Cape Riesling is the quiet storyteller of our history, Sauvignon Blanc is the vibrant conversation at the table. This wine captures the brightness of a Tulbagh summer morning — dew still clinging to the vines, air alive with the hum of bees.
Harvested in the cool pre-dawn hours, our Sauvignon Blanc bursts with aromas of passion fruit, gooseberry, and freshly cut herbs. Its lively acidity and clean finish make it the perfect match for goat’s cheese, grilled vegetables, or a simple plate of fish caught that same morning. It’s the wine we pour when friends arrive unexpectedly, when the braai coals are glowing, when laughter is already in the air.
Sémillon / Chardonnay – Harmony in a Glass
Some wines are about contrast; others, about harmony. Our Sémillon/Chardonnay blend is the latter — a marriage of varietals that seem made for each other. The Sémillon brings a lemon-lime brightness, while Chardonnay adds a softness, a whisper of stone fruit, and a round, lingering texture.
Unwooded and pure, this wine is a reflection of balance: balance in the vineyard, where each varietal is tended according to its needs; balance in the cellar, where neither grape dominates the other; and balance on the table, where it pairs just as gracefully with roast chicken as it does with a mild green curry. It’s a wine that mirrors the steady hands and patient hearts of those who craft it.
Bouquet Blanc – A Touch of Sweetness
In every range, there’s a wine that feels like celebration, like a smile you can taste. For us, it’s Bouquet Blanc. This natural sweet blend of Gewürztraminer and Muscat Blanc is a fragrant embrace — rose petals, ripe tropical fruit, and warm spice on the nose, followed by a lush sweetness balanced by freshness.
It pairs beautifully with malva pudding after a long Sunday lunch or with Cape Malay bobotie when the table is filled with family. But it is just as perfect for those quiet evenings when the valley grows still, and the only sound is the cork easing from the bottle.
Moscato Rosé – Summer in a Bottle
Our Moscato Rosé carries the colour of a Tulbagh sunset — soft pink with a shimmer of gold. Made from Muscat Ottonel and Shiraz, it is delicately sweet with notes of strawberry, lychee, and tropical fruit. Lightly effervescent, it dances on the palate.
It’s the wine for picnic blankets spread under oak trees, for afternoons when the air is warm but the breeze is cool, for fresh fruit and laughter shared among friends. Moscato Rosé is the invitation to linger a little longer in the joy of the moment.
Prestige – Strength and Elegance
Prestige is our bold statement — a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that speaks with authority yet never shouts. Deep ruby in the glass, it offers aromas of blackcurrant, plum, and subtle oak spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, with tannins that promise longevity and a finish that feels like the last note of a well-played song.
It’s the wine for long winter dinners, for slow-cooked roasts, for moments that call for something worthy of the occasion. Prestige is the bottle you open when you want to say, “This matters.”
Shiraz – Rich and Spicy
Our Shiraz is the warmth of the valley captured in a bottle — dark berries, a hint of pepper, gentle smokiness. It is a wine that feels like gathering around a fire, its richness a comfort against the chill. Perfect with grilled lamb or a hearty stew, it has the depth and complexity that comes from vines tended with care season after season.
Cabernet Sauvignon – Classic and Powerful
Finally, there is Cabernet Sauvignon: deep, smooth, and resolute. Blackberry, cassis, and cedarwood on the nose; full-bodied with a lingering finish on the palate. This is a wine for the cellar, for the special dinners years from now when its edges have softened and its heart has grown even deeper.
A Collection Woven from Land and Legacy
