The Tulbagh Valley

A Valley Where Climate and Soil Craft Elegance

Theuniskraal’s vineyards rest in the Winterhoek Valley, embraced on all sides by the towering Witzenberg, Obiqua, and Winterhoek mountains. This natural amphitheatre creates a unique microclimate — cool, protected, and kissed by gentle breezes — where vines ripen slowly, developing complexity and depth.

In winter, the mountains are dusted with snow, allowing the vines to fall into a deep, essential dormancy. Spring brings even budding and balanced growth, while long, warm summer days are tempered by the cool shadows of the surrounding peaks. This harmony of temperature ensures flavour concentration without sacrificing freshness — the hallmark of Theuniskraal wines.

Beneath the surface lies our foundation: stony, sandy-loam soils, painstakingly cultivated from a landscape rich in boulders. These well-drained soils stress the vines just enough to produce grapes of intensity and elegance. Here, noble varietals such as Cape Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon find their true expression.

Honouring the Land in Every Row

With 120 hectares under vine, our blocks are carefully planted to suit the unique character of each slope and aspect. A modern drip irrigation system, guided by moisture probes and weather monitoring, supplements nature only when needed. This balance of respect for tradition and thoughtful innovation allows us to craft wines that honour both the land and the generations who have farmed it.

At Theuniskraal, the vineyard is where every story begins — and where every bottle finds its soul.
